The Cleveland Officers

Origin Story: Amira is a professional businesswoman by day and a hardcore gamer by night. All the time, she’s a mother/wife and a superhero on the weekends, with a little bit of geekiness in between. She’s a huge sci-fi fan and a lover of anime and anything DC (still a fan of Marvel, but more of a DC girl). Her husband would tell you she has a slight obsession with Skyrim and Dragon Age, but who doesn’t!? Also, please don’t hesitate to add her if you are a PS4 holder (iamamira).

Geeky Loves: Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, Naruto, Sailor moon, Sherlock, Orphan Black, Lord of the Rings, DC & Marvel, and of course video games!

Brunch Drink: Mimosa

Geeky Boyfriend: Sebastian Michaelis – Black Butler

Origin Story: Sarah likes to think she’s a mother of dragons, which includes her dog Marceline (the Vampire Queen) and her two cats. She’s an assistant buyer, runs her own vintage Etsy shop, and likes to think she’s a DIY-er (one day, she’ll learn to sew!). Her husband has been trying to get her into Star Trek since they met, but she’s more of a Star Wars girl (though she does think Captain Janeway is a badass). She binge watches too much TV, drinks too much coffee and loves Cleveland.

Geeky Loves: Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Marvel, Disney, young adult novels, Adventure Time

Brunch Drink: Mimosa, of course. Bonus if it’s unexpected and different.

Geeky Boyfriend: Ben Wyatt from Parks & Rec. He’s a nerd – that counts, right?

Origin Story: I didn’t realize how much of a geek I was until I had kids. I read Tolkien and watched Miyazaki as a teenager, but my daughter was the one who later introduced me to some Funimation animes (Kuroshitsuji, for starters) and I was hooked. She also encouraged me to read Harry Potter. So, come to think of it, this is mostly her fault. My middle child has got me making kirby and goombah plushies, and my youngest has turned me into an Assassin’s Creed fan. I honestly don’t remember when I became a Nerdfighter, but it was a long time ago.

Geeky Loves: Harry Potter, Hayao Miyazaki, Anime cons, ASoIaF (and GoT, I guess), Sherlock, anything even remotely related to Vlogbrothers (it’s impossible to pick a favorite, but Hank is my favorite), and Steampunk makers

Brunch Drink: I like my sugar with coffee and cream.

Geeky Boyfriend: Fictional: Howl. Real: Alton Brown (he’s real, I swear).

GGB DC- RPG Heroes Brunch

Suit up, and ship out heroes: It’s time for brunch!

After being delayed a month by old Mother Nature and her nasty habit of dropping snow this year, we were finally able to have our second brunch! We decided to go with the theme we had selected for February since we had already put so much time into it. Our theme of RPG Heroes also allowed for an excellent variety of characters to make an appearance. Anyone from Tifa Lockhart of Final Fantasy XII to any of the 718 would be an excellent choice for a guest appearance! Continue reading

GGB Kaiserslautern- Space Adventurer Brunch

Kaiserslautern’s second brunch was held on March 21st and our theme was Space Adventurer! It’s safe to say that almost all geek girls love space and sci-fi, so we wanted to celebrate our favorite Space Adventurers! We were thrilled to have so many new brunchettes attend. Continue reading

GGB Kaiserslautern- Magical Girl Brunch

Geek Girl Brunch Kaiserslautern is the first international chapter! We’re hoping there will be more in the future and the European chapters can plan a get together. For our launch, we choose the Magical Girl theme. Why? Because there is nothing like having a big opener with the message that we are not damsels, we can save ourselves! We’re all magical girls right? Plus, most of us started our geeky awakening with Sailor Moon. It only seemed fitting.

Our brunch location took place at Sam Kullman’s Diner in Kaiserslautern and it did not disappoint. It was the cutest 50’s style diner and the breakfast was really, really good. It made some of us homesick in a good way. Good ol’ American style breakfast – oh and did we mention they had awesome milkshakes and alcoholic coffee? Yeah…score!

Our First International Chapter: Kaiserslautern, Germany!

KtownGGBdrinksThis weekend Geek Girl Brunch officially became international thanks to our Kaiserslautern Chapter in Germany! Although both officers, Cree and Ashley, are American, the chapter is a dynamic mix of both Americans and Germans. One thing is for sure, no matter what country brunchettes are from they can all speak geek.

Get to know the KTown officers in the interview below. Find out what it’s like being an American geek abroad, why they wanted to become a Geek Girl Brunch Officer and more!

The Kodama Mani by Melissa Grey for Studio Ghibli Brunch

In honor of GGB NY’s Studio Ghibli brunch, I turned to one of my favorite Miyazaki-helmed films, Princess Mononoke, for inspiration. With its unparalleled animation and strong aesthetic, the Ghibli oeuvre provides a ton of nail art design possibilities, but I wanted to go with something simple and easy to replicate for this tutorial. I’ve always loved the kodama — the transluscent tree spirits that make that slightly unsettling but also kind of cute clacking sound — and what they symbolize, particularly at the film’s end. To get a creepy/cute kodama mani, just follow these simple steps.
